Indian Plum/Osoberry
Oemleria cerasiformislOsmaronia cerasiformis
This is one of the first shrubs to flower in the West Hylebos, sometimes as early as February. The astringent odor of the new leaves (which appear after the flowers) distinguishes Indian Plum from other species.
By early summer, the leaves are yellowing, and the ripe purple berries resemble tiny plums. The pit occupies a large portion of this somewhat bitter fruit.
Native peoples ate small amounts of the fruit either fresh, cooked, or dried and applied the pulp of Indian Plum twigs to sores.
