Fireweed
Epilobium angustifolium
Rose-purple flowers of the fireweed solidly color the remains of clear-cuts and old bums. Fireweed also favors meadows and thickets at mid to high elevations. An Indian legend tells that every fireweed plant is the soul of a tree that was burned in a forest fire.
Pacific Northwest Native Americans used fireweed for fishing nets, blankets, padding, and food. The leaves are high in vitamin C and make a healthy tea. Fireweed is an important plant to native pollinators and beekeepers, who transport their hives to the Pacific Northwest mountains for producing excellent honey.
