Historical Cabin Park
Description of the joint project between the Friends of the Hylebos, City of Federal Way, and the Federal Way Historical Society to improve the historical cabin park.
For years, the West Hylebos Wetlands was a hard-to-find treasure, noted only by a small sign off S. 348th Street and accessible only by driving over a private one-lane road.
The
Friends joined forces with the Historical Society of Federal Way and
Federal Way Parks to develop the multi-purpose Federal Way Historical
Cabin Park, which will provide an easy-to-find entrance to the West
Hylebos Wetlands.
The cabin park, as its known, has been
constructed in stages, beginning with a walking trail to the West
Hylebos Wetlands Boardwalk, and an environmentally friendly parking
lot. The lot and sidewalks, which are constructed from pervious
pavement, actually allow rainwater to flow through the concrete and
into the soil. This eliminates surface water runoff from the lot and
protects water quality. The new parking lot was designed to allow for school buses, which were not able to enter the old parking lot.
The Historical Society is restoring the
two pioneer era cabins on the park and will be working with the Friends
and Federal Way Parks on future intrepretive signage and restroom
facilities.
The Friends are also conducting an invasive weed control and native plant restoration at the site.
