Brooklake Habitat Restoration
summary of the Brooklake Habitat Restoration project
Work began at the Brooklake Blueberry Farm in 2002, removing a 10-foot tall wall of invasive Himalayan blackberry that had taken over much of the former farm. Over five years, more than 80,000 square feet of blackberry have been cleared, allowing existing native plants to flourish.
We supplemented the natives with 3,000 native trees and shrubs. Due to the heavy invasive plant presence, this site has required ongoing annual maintenance to remove blackberry, thistle and purple loosestrife.
With continued maintenance and volunteer support, the site has responded and is well on its way to becoming a healthy riparian forest.
