What's a Typical Volunteer Day Like?

Description of what volunteers can expect on a Friends of the Hylebos volunteer day

A typical volunteer event begins in the morning, usually about 9 a.m. Volunteers are asked to sign in when they arrive. There's time to chat with other volunteers and get snacks and refreshments at the snack table. Liquid energy is provided, in the form of coffee donated by Poverty Bay Coffee Company.

Restoration Coordinator Hillary Kleeb gives a 10-15 minute introduction encompassing:

  • The Friends of the Hylebos
  • the project
  • project work crews, such as EarthCorps or the WCC
  • the work goals for the day
  • tools and safety requirements

After this, tools and gloves are handed out, and if the group is large, we may divide up into smaller groups to be led by a group leader who has training in native and invasive plants.

We generally work from 10 a.m. until noon, at which point lunch is provided.  After lunch, we work from 12:30-2 p.m., do a short debrief, and go home.
