Public Awareness
Description of Friends of the Hylebos' efforts to increase public awareness about the Hylebos Creek Watershed and stewardship
People can only choose to protect those things they're aware of, and the Hylebos is no different. The Friends actively works to increase awareness of the Hylebos Watershed and ways to help conserve it.
Public Presentations
Friends staff enjoy giving presentations to community and school groups about the Hylebos Watershed, West Hylebos Wetlands and ways that people can get involved in making their watershed a healthy home for people and wildlife. Contact Chris Carrel for a presentation on the Hylebos Creek Conservation Initiative and general Friends of the Hylebos information. Contact Hillary Kleeb for a presentation about the Hylebos Stream Team and volunteer activities.
Watershed or Site Tours
The best way to learn about the Hylebos is to get out into the Hylebos. The Friends guides public officials and small groups on tours of the watershed and specific sites, in order to enhance decisionmakers' understanding of the Hylebos and the issues it faces. King County Executive Ron Sims, King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, King County Councilmember Larry Phillips, Representative Skip Priest, Washington Transportation Secretary Doug MacDonald, Former State Senator Dino Rossi, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christine Todd Whitman, Marine Conservation Biology Institute President Elliott Norse, congressional staff members, and representatives from a host of state and local city agencies have all learned firsthand about the beauty of the Hylebos through Friends' tours.
Print and Online Publications
The Friends provides a great deal of Hylebos information through its quarterly newsletter, Hylebos Highlights, brochures and other materials, and through this website and the Friends' blogs. To receive the Hylebos Highlights, which is sent to all members, become a member of the Friends today. Contact Sheila Jackson for copies of Friends brochures or other materials.
